Lyrics

Ballad of a Boy

He’s been lying quiet, scared to call
For fear of yet another maul
His sparkling eyes, his laughter and joy
Buried deep in terror this beautiful boy.

In a lonely cave withdraw and hide -
It makes you safe from the crashing tide.
When they pick and prod to know who you are
The dancing dolphin swims in from afar.

You can ride with him while you face the truth,
The time will come when you reach your youth,
You can choose between the hurt and the pain,
Or maybe give humanity a chance to gain.

Prepare to live with loss after loss,
Happy in a tide, dolphin, sea-moss,
Slip on rocks when your time has come,
When your heart will open - and your spirit run.

Came today - I’d been loved by my friends,
The woman who saw me, the love to defend.
I entered the sea - body shook through my thighs.
Sharp intake of breath, boy, he leapt high.

I watched intrigued the joyful release:
Not buried or hurt, the history deceased.
Beautiful boy with dolphin leaps high
Real freedom at last, his spirit will fly.

I’ve always loved and given compassion,
Though love for me was severely rationed
I don’t know how we miss the point -
a child needs love, a spirit to anoint.

Beautiful boy so loving so true,
Broke a cycle of violence, it might come to you.
When a child looks intent with love in the eyes
Remember give love, don’t hurt, hide, disguise.

Lying quiet, scared to call,
For fear of yet another maul.
Sparkling eyes, laughter and joy
Buried deep in terror this beautiful boy.

In a lonely cave withdraw and hide
It makes you safe from the crashing tide,
When they pick and prod, to know who you are,
Dancing dolphin swims in from afar.

Beautiful boy so loving, so true,
Broke a cycle of violence that might come for you.
When a child looks intent, with love in the eyes,
Remember - give love, don’t hurt, hide, disguise.
